The rundown on CBD – Things you probably didn’t know
These days, we’ve been hearing a lot about CBD and its effects. Most people understand it simply as a chemical compound that, unlike THC, does not cause you to get high. But what is it exactly and how does it work? Let’s go over it!
Cannabidiol (CBD) is the second most prevalent active ingredient that is found in cannabis. CBD can be found in both hemp plants and cannabis plants. However, Cannabis contains more THC and less CBD. Hemp contains more CBD and less THC.
CBD is attractive for some because it has some benefits without the psychoactive effects that come with THC. CBD works by interacting with your endocannabinoid system. There are 113 currently known cannabinoids, with each playing a role in your endocannabinoid system.
What is the endocannabinoid system?
A mouthful, but it is a complex biological system in the human body. Medical researchers had discovered it back in the 1990s, however, a lot is still unknown about how it works and its interactions. What we do know, is that it does impact your appetite, sleep, mood and even memory. The endocannabinoid system allows CBD to treat a wide range of symptoms. CBD binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors. CB1 and CB2 are the most researched cannabinoid receptors within the body. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system, where they regular brain function. CB2 receptors are mostly found on immune cells throughout the bloodstream.
It is through this that CBD is believed to have a wide variety of symptoms and ailments. Some of the benefits of CBD:
You may experience less inflammation.
CBD attaches indirectly to cannabinoid receptors in the body which are responsible for functions such as appetite, pain sensation, mood and memory. This process, in turn can help decrease inflammation and therefore, it is believed to help reduce chronic pain for some people.
It may help those with epilepsy and seizures.
Clinical trials have shown that CBD can be a highly effective anticonvulsant and antiepileptic. It’s unclear how the mechanisms work but research is still ongoing.
It may help you feel less anxiety.
Some studies have shown that moderate and even high levels of CBD have been found to help some alleviate social and situation anxiety.
These are the most common benefits of using CBD. Of course, research on CBD is still relatively new and ongoing but its definitely showing lots of promise. CBD will work differently for everyone since we are all unique. I’m excited to see what other benefits CBD can bring in the future!
